Defining a robust analytics framework to measure business success

Lacking a common reporting platform and with a need to support both company-owned and franchise stores, Pet Supplies Plus’ challenge was capturing the data to inform critical business decisions. Furthermore, the organization wanted to deliver insights on store operations to store team leaders using both traditional web and mobile devices.

Rightpoint worked with Pet Supplies Plus to develop an overall Business Intelligence and Analytics Strategy and Roadmap by defining and prioritizing key performance indicators (KPIs). Pet Supplies Plus prioritized 100+ KPIs and separated the project into three distinct phases of work. Microsoft’s Power BI was selected as the delivery platform due to its unique ability to provide dynamic and engaging dashboards leveraging both enterprise and personal data sources.

Business intelligence and powerful real-time dashboards to fuel decision-making

Rightpoint worked with Pet Supplies Plus to design and develop dashboards and reports that provide insight for both operational executives and store managers. The solution provides both summarized and detailed information from Point-of-Sale data on sales and margin at the product SKU level, and allows store team leaders, executives and franchisees to access sales and margin data anytime, anywhere via the web or on their mobile device.

Armed with the ability to view a high volume of data in a visually pleasing format, Pet Supplies Plus’ store team leaders, district team leaders, operations executives and franchisees can obtain a comprehensive, real-time picture of how their stores are doing: what they’re selling, how much, and at what profit margin. The dashboard allows users to “slice and dice” the data by store, district, product and product category, and provides an array of graphic representations to facilitate key insight including interactive line graphs, columns charts, scatter diagrams and maps.

Collaboration across every level of the company

To get the design just right, we worked with knowledge leaders of every stripe within Pet Supplies Plus: managers, veteran employees, and even the head of their supply chain. We used this group of experts as a test audience, prototyping dashboards and functionalities for them to try, and collecting their feedback to arrive at the final iterations.

Securing important data to deliver store-specific information

A key component to the Store Team Leader Dashboard is its ability to securely deliver store-specific information to hundreds of different users over a wide geographical area. Leveraging the role-based security included as part of the Microsoft Business Intelligence stack, the data is dynamically filtered based on the logged in Power BI user and the stores for which they are responsible.
